It developed in the Southern United States from rock and roll, country music, and blues, and is focused generally on electric guitar and vocals.

   This regional form emerged in the early 70s with such artists as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker Band, and Atlanta Rhythm Section.
